Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon
Manan Desai, M.D., has studied and worked within the field of cardiac surgery for more than a decade, but admits he still marvels at its impact every day. He recalls witnessing his first heart transplant while training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, watching as the heart was explanted from a deceased individual and placed into a patient.
“It started beating again...as if it didn’t know it's in another body. It was one of the most thrilling sights. It continues to fascinate me even after seeing so many transplants and doing so many surgeries.”
The idea of helping others, as well as the need for deft technical skills and advanced knowledge of biophysics, anatomy, embryology and biology, is what inspired Dr. Desai to pursue cardiac surgery in the first place. He knew it would be a great challenge, and he was ready to be tested- much to the surprise of his family and friends, he joked.
